South Carolina State University (SCSU) was founded in 1896 as the Colored Normal, Industrial, Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina. It was established by the South Carolina General Assembly as a land grant institution for African Americans. The college was initially located in a former plantation house near Orangeburg and opened its doors to students in 1897. In 1902, the name of the school changed to South Carolina State College and it moved to its current location in Orangeburg.
Throughout its history, SCSU has been dedicated to providing quality education and serving as a beacon of hope for African Americans. In 1930, it became the first publicly supported four-year college for African Americans in the state. It achieved university status in 1954, making it one of the first historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to do so. The university has also played an important role in civil rights history; during the Civil Rights Movement, SCSU served as a major training site for activists pushing for desegregation across South Carolina. Today, SCSU is one of only two public HBCUs left in South Carolina and is home to over 4,000 students from all over the world. The university offers more than 60 degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate level across seven schools: Arts & Humanities; Business & Applied Professional Sciences; Education & Behavioral Sciences; Graduate Studies; Natural Sciences & Mathematics; Nursing & Allied Health Professions; and Graduate Studies & Research/Honors College.
