Sonoma State University was founded in 1960 as Sonoma State College. The school was established by the state of California to provide higher education opportunities to the residents of Sonoma County. The college opened its doors to students in 1961 with a student body of just over 300 students. The college grew quickly and the first bachelor’s degree was awarded in 1965. In 1968, Sonoma State College became Sonoma State University, making it the first public university in California north of San Francisco Bay.

Since then, SSU has continued to expand its academic offerings and campus facilities. In 1970, SSU opened its first residence hall, providing housing for approximately 500 students on campus. In 1975, SSU opened its new library building which now houses over 750,000 volumes and provides access to numerous online databases and other resources. In 1989, SSU opened its new Visual Arts Center which offers classes in art history, painting and other visual arts disciplines. It offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as several certificate and credential programs. The university has a student population of over 9,000 students, with an acceptance rate of 68%.
