Skidmore College was founded in 1903 by Lucy Skidmore Scribner. The college was established with a mission to provide a quality education to women who were previously excluded from higher education. In 1922, it became the first institution of higher learning in New York State to offer a degree program for women. In the 1950s, Skidmore began admitting men and the college’s first male students graduated in 1956. Since then, Skidmore has grown and developed into one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation.
