Simmons College was established in 1899 by John Simmons, a wealthy Boston industrialist. The initial purpose of the college was to provide educational opportunities for women, who at the time had limited access to higher education. In 1902, Simmons became the first college in the United States to award bachelor’s degrees to women. Over the next century, Simmons College continued to expand its offerings and its campus. In 1972, it became co-educational and began admitting male students into its undergraduate programs.
