Shepherd University was founded in 1871 as the Shepherd College. It was established by the citizens of Berkeley and Jefferson counties in West Virginia to provide educational opportunities for their children. The college was dedicated on September 12, 1871, with a student body of 45 students and five faculty members. The first classes began on November 1, 1871.
The college grew rapidly over the next few years and by 1875 had grown to an enrollment of over 200 students. It was chartered as a four-year institution in 1895 and granted its first bachelor’s degrees to seven graduates in 1896. During the early 1900s, Shepherd College continued to expand its academic offerings and introduced courses in sciences and engineering for the first time in 1906. In 1916, the college added a school of music, which later became known as the School of Music, Theater & Dance. In 1925, Shepherd officially became Shepherd University when it was granted university status by the state legislature. See topschoolsintheusa for pharmacy schools in Florida.
