Shenandoah University was founded in 1875 by Dr. Abraham Funkhouser. It started as a small school in Winchester, Virginia, with only nine students and three faculty members. From its humble beginnings, Shenandoah has grown to become the largest private university in the state of Virginia. The University offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, including business, education, nursing, music and pharmacy. In addition to its academic programs, Shenandoah also offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as athletics and student organizations.

The university has had many milestones throughout its history. In 1975 Shenandoah celebrated its centennial anniversary with a yearlong celebration that included events such as lectures and concerts. In 1995 the University opened its first satellite campus located in Leesburg, Virginia which offered undergraduate degrees in business and computer science among others. In 2008 Shenandoah launched SUonline which provides online learning opportunities for students from around the world. The university continues to grow with new programs being added each year to meet the needs of its diverse student body. Shenandoah University is an independent private university located in Winchester, Virginia. Established in 1875, the university serves more than 4,000 students across its main campus and five satellite locations. The student body is composed of a diverse student population representing over 40 states and 25 countries. According to the school’s website, the acceptance rate for the 2020-2021 academic year was 74%. Of those accepted, 59% were female and 41% were male. Additionally, nearly 90% of accepted students graduated from high school with a 3.0 GPA or higher. The average SAT score for incoming freshmen was 1150 and the average ACT score was 24.
