Shaw University was founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society. It was the first higher education institution in the state of North Carolina for African Americans, and the first school to offer a degree to an African American woman. The university was named after Reverend Henry Martin Shaw, who donated $10,000 to help establish it. At its founding, Shaw University only had three faculty members and nine students. It has since grown into a thriving university with over 2,500 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Shaw University has served as a beacon of hope for African Americans throughout its history. It has provided educational opportunities to those who have been denied access elsewhere due to racism and segregation. During the Civil Rights era, Shaw University played an important role in providing education for African Americans that would otherwise have been denied them due to segregation laws. In 1969, it became one of the founding members of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), which provides financial aid and other resources to private colleges and universities nationwide.
