Seton Hall University was founded in 1856 by then-Bishop of Newark, James Roosevelt Bayley. It was named after his aunt, Elizabeth Ann Seton, who was the first native-born American to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Initially, Seton Hall was an all-male seminary school that focused on educating young men for the priesthood. However, in 1861 the school opened its doors to lay students and began offering a variety of undergraduate degree programs.
