Savannah State University (SSU) was established in 1890 as a two-year normal school to educate African Americans in the state of Georgia. Originally called Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, it was the first public historically black university in the state. SSU’s mission was to provide a quality education to African Americans and prepare them for productive careers.

In 1950, SSU became a four-year college and changed its name to Savannah State College. In 1996, the college achieved university status, becoming Savannah State University. Over the years, SSU has grown from a small two-year normal school into a comprehensive regional university that offers more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
