Samuel Merritt University (SMU) was founded in 1909 as the College of Physicians and Surgeons. It was the first medical school in Northern California to open its doors to women, African Americans, and other historically underrepresented groups. Since then, SMU has been a leader in health sciences education, preparing outstanding healthcare professionals for the Bay Area and beyond.

In 1975, the college changed its name to Samuel Merritt College and broadened its scope to include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and health sciences.
