Sam Houston State University (SHSU) was founded in 1879 in Huntsville, Texas. It is the oldest public university in Texas and was originally known as Sam Houston Normal Institute. The school was established to train teachers and provide educational opportunities for the citizens of Texas. In 1923, the school changed its name to Sam Houston State Teachers College, and began offering bachelor’s degrees in education. In 1965, it became a comprehensive university and adopted its current name.
Since then, SHSU has grown significantly in size and reputation.
