Salem College was founded in 1772 by the Moravians, a Protestant religious group. It is the oldest female educational institution in the United States and the twelfth-oldest college in the country. The college’s history is closely tied to the Moravian Church and its mission to provide an education for young women. For its first century, Salem College was an all-female school that offered a classical education with an emphasis on music, literature, and languages.
