Salem College was founded in 1772 by the Moravians, a Protestant religious group. It is the oldest female educational institution in the United States and the twelfth-oldest college in the country. The college’s history is closely tied to the Moravian Church and its mission to provide an education for young women. For its first century, Salem College was an all-female school that offered a classical education with an emphasis on music, literature, and languages. The curriculum included courses in Latin, Greek, French, German, Italian, as well as mathematics and natural sciences. In 1866 Salem became a coeducational institution and began offering courses such as modern languages, English literature, and history. Over the next century Salem College grew to include degrees in business administration and computer science. In 2005 it joined forces with Wake Forest University to become Salem College of Winston-Salem University.
