Saginaw Valley State University was founded in 1963 as a result of the Michigan Legislature’s passage of the Saginaw Valley College Act. The college was originally located at the former campus of the Saginaw General Hospital and opened its doors to its first class of students in 1965. In 1969, the college achieved university status, becoming Saginaw Valley State University.

The university has since grown significantly to become one of Michigan’s premier public universities with an enrollment of nearly 8,000 students and more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs.
