Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey at New Brunswick was founded in 1766 as Queen’s College. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States and one of America’s oldest colonial colleges. It was originally established to train Dutch Reformed ministers, but it soon began to admit students of all religious denominations. In 1825, Queen’s College was renamed Rutgers College in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, a Revolutionary War hero and philanthropist who donated funds to keep the school afloat.
In the late 19th century, Rutgers expanded its offerings to include professional courses in law and medicine. The state legislature officially declared Rutgers a university in 1924, and changed its name to Rutgers University. Over the next two decades, Rutgers grew rapidly and expanded into several different campuses throughout New Jersey; today there are five campuses located in Newark, Camden, Camden-New Brunswick (with Douglass Residential College for women), New Brunswick-Piscataway (with Livingston Residential College for men), and Newark-Newark (with Honors Living Learning Community). In addition to these five campuses, Rutgers also offers satellite locations throughout the state. Currently there are more than 50 undergraduate majors offered at Rutgers University across all five campuses.
