Rust College was founded in 1866 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It is the oldest historically black college in Mississippi and one of the oldest in the United States. The college is located on a 40-acre campus in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Rust College has a long history of providing educational opportunities to African-Americans that have been historically denied access to higher education. The college began as a preparatory school for freed slaves during Reconstruction and eventually evolved into a four-year liberal arts institution.
The early days of Rust College were difficult and filled with financial struggles, but it persevered due to its mission to provide quality education for African Americans. In 1871, the school received its first federal funding which enabled it to expand its curriculum and student body size. By 1885, Rust College had grown from an enrollment of just 10 students to over 200 students with nearly 30 faculty members. In addition, the college had also developed new academic programs such as industrial arts, home economics, and music that would help prepare graduates for successful lives outside of academia. In 1895, Rust College began offering bachelor’s degrees and by 1910 its enrollment had increased to over 600 students with nearly 100 faculty members teaching them a variety of courses ranging from classical literature to industrial arts. During this time period, many prominent African American leaders graduated from Rust College including civil rights leader Medgar Evers who earned his bachelor’s degree at Rust in 1952. Over time, Rust College has continued to evolve and grow while maintaining its commitment to educating African Americans who desire higher learning opportunities. Today it offers more than 30 undergraduate degrees as well as master’s programs in Education and Liberal Studies.
