Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was founded in 1874 by Chauncey Rose and Amos Hulman Jr. Originally known as Rose Polytechnic Institute, it opened its doors with only two faculty members and 21 students. The school was established to provide a rigorous technical education in the area of engineering and science. Over the years, the school has grown significantly and now offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs in engineering, mathematics, science, and technology.

The college’s first president, Dr. John W. Schuck, was appointed in 1884 and served for over 20 years until his retirement in 1906. In 1925 Rose Polytechnic Institute became Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology when it was renamed in honor of Amos Hulman Jr., who had been instrumental in establishing the school decades earlier. In the decades following its renaming, RHIT experienced tremendous growth both academically and physically—enrollment tripled between 1940–1950 alone! New academic departments were created including chemical engineering (1951) and electrical engineering (1953). By 1960 RHIT had become one of the top engineering schools in the nation; it was accredited by the Engineering Council for Professional Development that same year.

In 1965 RHIT celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special centennial celebration which included a visit from President Lyndon B Johnson who spoke about scientific progress during his address at commencement that year. Since then RHIT has continued to grow exponentially; new buildings have been erected on campus including an advanced technology center which opened in 2005 to help train students for jobs related to cutting-edge technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence. In addition to offering traditional degree programs like mechanical engineering or computer science, RHIT also offers several specialized degrees such as aerospace engineering or biomedical engineering which are designed to prepare students for careers related to these fields specifically.
