Roosevelt University was founded in 1945 by Edward J. Sparling and his wife, Eleanor. Sparling was a prominent Chicago businessman and philanthropist who wanted to create a university that would offer educational opportunities to people from all walks of life. The university’s mission was to provide access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds who may not have had the opportunity to attend college otherwise.
The school opened its doors with an enrollment of only seven students, but quickly grew over the years as more people learned about Roosevelt’s commitment to providing quality education regardless of race or socio-economic standing. The university became known for its innovative approach and dedication to problem-solving and social justice. One example is the establishment of the first interracial and coeducational dormitory in the United States at Roosevelt University in 1946, which showed their commitment to diversity and inclusion even before such concepts were widely accepted.
