Rollins College was founded in 1885 by New England Congregationalist minister and educator Edward Payson Hooker. It was named in honor of his benefactor, businessman and philanthropist, John Rollins. The college was initially founded as a coeducational institution of higher learning and has remained true to its mission of providing an excellent liberal arts education to students from all backgrounds.
The college was located on the site of the former Orange County Courthouse in Winter Park, Florida, which provided a prime location for students to learn and live. In its early years, Rollins College held classes in buildings that were leased or purchased until the first permanent building, Knowles Hall, was constructed in 1889. This building housed classrooms, laboratories, offices and a library for students and faculty alike. As enrollment grew over the years, so did the number of buildings on campus including residence halls for men and women as well as academic buildings such as McKean Hall which opened in 1895. In addition to providing an excellent education to its students, Rollins College also became involved in local community affairs through both student organizations such as the Civic League which worked with city government officials on various projects aimed at improving the quality of life for all Winter Park residents; and faculty-led initiatives such as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Association (FIAA) which helped organize collegiate sports teams throughout Central Florida.
