Rochester Institute of Technology was founded in 1829 as a small, all-male school of mechanics. Initially, the school offered courses in carpentry, blacksmithing, and engineering. Over time, the school began to offer more advanced courses and expanded its offerings to include mathematics and science. In 1885, the school was renamed Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute and began offering degrees in engineering. In 1944, the school became Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and began offering degrees in business administration, fashion design, photography, computer science and other areas.
