Rhode Island College (RIC) was founded in 1854 as the Rhode Island Normal School. It was the first school in the state to offer teacher training programs, and its classes were held in a rented building on South Main Street. The original goal of the school was to provide teachers for the elementary and secondary schools of Rhode Island; however, it soon expanded its scope to include other areas of study. In 1909, it became Rhode Island State College and began offering courses in liberal arts and sciences. In 1951, it was renamed Rhode Island College and began offering post-graduate degrees. Over time, RIC has grown into a comprehensive university with an enrollment of over 10,000 students enrolled in more than 50 undergraduate programs and over 30 graduate programs. Today, RIC is committed to providing an excellent education while promoting intellectual growth, personal development, and service to society. The college also offers a variety of extracurricular activities including athletics, student organizations, community service opportunities, internships and study abroad programs.
