ID cards/identity cards

[1] Among others, Germans, Austrians and Swiss as well as citizens of all EU countries can enter Germany for unlimited stays with an identity card that is still valid for at least 6 months. However, if the arrival and departure takes place via third countries, a passport is required.

Visa information

Documents required upon entry

Extension of stay

EU citizens and Swiss citizens, among others, do not need a visa for stays longer than 90 days.

Entry with children

Since June 27, 2012, children need their own travel document (passport / children’s passport) for trips abroad (also within the EU). Entries of children in the parental passport are no longer possible.

Entry with pets

The import of dogs and cats is permitted under the following aspects: The animals must be easily identifiable, either through a tattoo or a microchip. Import from EU countries: 5 animals are allowed, which must be over 3 months old with a valid rabies vaccination at least 21 days before entry. A valid certificate of rabies vaccination must be available. A health certificate that is not older than 5 days and has been issued by an official veterinarian of the country of origin is also required. The requirements have become stricter and vary depending on the animal’s country of origin. If the conditions are not met, the animals are quarantined. Note: The import of attack dogs (e.g. Pitbull, Mastiff, Tosa) is prohibited and may also vary from airline to airline.
