The college admissions process can be daunting, since students typically have to compete against thousands of others to claim spots on the schools of their choice. Meeting demands of College eligibility and make a college application stand out is especially important if a student is applying to a selective school or to a selective program within a school.

High School Diploma/Test Results

Colleges are looking for students who have at least a high school diploma or GED. In addition, many schools want students to submit scores from standardized tests such as the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Schools such as Monroe Community College in New York also requires students to complete the English and math College placement tests, such as the ACCUPLACER, developed by the College Board. Prerequisites

Students who wish to enroll in a two-year associate’s degree or four-year bachelor’s degree also must submit high school transcripts, showing that they have implemented a number of prerequisite courses. These course qualification requirements generally include English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language lab, history and art, with the number of years in each subject area which varies by school. If high school students have completed a college-level courses, they must submit transcripts from all colleges attended. Home schooled students must also submit a home study certificate or a State-endorsed transcript from a home study program.

In addition, some college applications require high school students to take more college-level pre-requisite courses before enrolling in their specific application. For example, in dental hygiene associate degree program at Indiana University, students must complete the courses, including public speaking, human anatomy/physiology and chemistry with a lab. In many health programmes, such as medical assistance program offered by Kaplan College, the students document the various vaccinations and pass a criminal background check in order to be eligible for enrollment.

Interviews/Recommendations

Some high schools–especially private colleges and universities-students must complete a pass interview as part of the application process.
