Reed College was founded in 1908 by Oregon philanthropist and businessman, Simeon Reed. It was the first college in the Pacific Northwest to offer a liberal arts education. The college was originally known as the Reed Institute, and it was located in downtown Portland. The original curriculum included courses in English, history, mathematics, Latin, Greek, science, and philosophy. Over time, the curriculum expanded to include more advanced courses such as psychology and sociology.
