The vast wild areas of the Selous Reserve are protected by the state, the largest population of elephants in all of Africa lives here. And in the Mahale Mountains National Park, chimpanzees are found in abundance. Scientists studying the habits of great apes have chosen this park as the main place for their research.

Festivals and holidays
