Prescott College was founded in 1966 by a group of visionary educators and social activists. It was the first private, non-profit college in the United States to focus on “experiential education”—the idea that learning should be hands-on and rooted in real-world experience. The founders believed that education should be an active process of discovery, exploration, and engagement with the world around us.
In its early years, Prescott College focused primarily on environmental studies and outdoor education. It offered courses in backpacking, natural history, wilderness survival skills, and environmental science. In addition to its innovative curriculum, the college also established a strong commitment to social justice and activism. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became known for its progressive stance on issues such as civil rights and nuclear disarmament.
