Pratt Institute was founded in 1887 by industrialist Charles Pratt. He believed that education should be accessible to all, regardless of economic class, and established the Institute as a free school for the working people of Brooklyn. The school quickly outgrew its original location and moved to its current location in Clinton Hill. As the school’s reputation grew, so did its enrollment and it soon became one of the most prestigious art and design colleges in the world. In addition to offering a variety of undergraduate programs, Pratt also began offering graduate degrees in fine arts, architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion design, and other related fields.
In recent years, Pratt has continued to expand its offerings by introducing an honors college and an international center for research. The college also maintains strong ties with industry professionals through internships and research opportunities for students. Additionally, Pratt has established itself as an innovator in sustainability initiatives such as green building design and energy efficient practices. These efforts have been recognized by organizations such as the US Green Building Council which awarded Pratt their highest honor for sustainability leadership in 2014. As a result of these initiatives, Pratt is now considered a leader among other educational institutions interested in reducing their environmental impact.
