Prairie View A&M University Acceptance Rate, Average GPA, SAT and ACT Scores

Prairie View A&M University is an historically black college located in Prairie View, Texas. Founded in 1876, it was originally established as the Alta Vista Agriculture and Mechanical College for the Colored Race by a former slave, former Texas state senator, and entrepreneur named Richard Allen. Its purpose was to provide higher education opportunities for freed slaves and their descendants. The school initially only offered basic agricultural courses such as animal husbandry, crop harvesting, and blacksmithing. In 1879, the school changed its name to Prairie View Normal School and College of Industrial Arts when it began offering more advanced courses in areas such as home economics and teacher training.

The school’s curriculum received a major boost in 1917 when a new president named Dr. William H. Jones introduced new degree programs such as engineering and commerce. This allowed the university to become one of the first historically black colleges to offer degrees in fields other than agriculture or teaching. During this time period, many students were also sent abroad to study at universities such as Oxford University in England and Harvard University in Massachusetts. In addition, Prairie View A&M became one of the first colleges to offer courses online with its Distance Learning Program in 1996. See topschoolsintheusa for LSAT test dates and centers in Iowa.
