The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico was founded in 1948 as the first Catholic university in the Caribbean. It was established by a group of lay Catholics, who sought to provide higher education to the people of Puerto Rico. The university is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and its mission is to educate and form persons who, through their professional preparation and Christian values, will become leaders in their respective fields with a commitment to service.

Since its founding, the university has grown significantly and now offers more than 50 undergraduate programs and 15 graduate programs across five different schools: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Humanities & Education, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Law. In addition to its academic offerings, the university also provides a range of student services such as counseling, career development, athletics programs and social activities. The university’s campus is located in Hato Rey near San Juan and consists of 21 buildings spread over 27 acres. The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PCUPR) is a private, nonprofit institution of higher learning located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Founded in 1948, PCUPR is the oldest and largest private university in Puerto Rico. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across a variety of disciplines, such as business administration, engineering, law, and medicine. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the university enrolled a total of 8,871 students across all its campuses. Of these students, around 6,817 were undergraduates and 2,054 were graduate students. The student body was composed of approximately 73% female students and 27% male students. Additionally, approximately 77% of all enrolled students were from Puerto Rico while 23% hailed from other countries around the world.
