Point Park University was founded in 1960 as Pittsburgh Playhouse, a professional theater conservatory. It grew quickly, becoming Point Park College in 1965. The college was then accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and began offering a variety of degree programs. In 1989, the college was granted university status and changed its name to Point Park University. Since then, the school has grown exponentially, adding new degree programs and expanding its campus with additional buildings and facilities.
