Philander Smith College is a private, historically black college located in Little Rock, Arkansas. Founded in 1877, it is one of the oldest African-American colleges in the United States. The college was established as a result of the efforts of Reverend James M. Brown and other members of Little Rock’s African American community. With financial assistance from the American Missionary Association and the Freedmen’s Bureau, Brown worked to expand educational opportunities for African Americans in Little Rock.
