Peru State College was founded in 1867 as a teacher-training school and was the first college in Nebraska. Initially, it was called the Peru Normal School and its mission was to prepare teachers for the growing population of Nebraska. The school quickly grew in popularity and by 1871, it had nearly 200 students enrolled. In 1886, the college changed its name to Peru State Normal School and College and began offering both two-year and four-year degree programs. In 1921, the school officially became Peru State College, which offered bachelor’s degrees in education, science, arts, home economics, and music. Throughout its history, Peru State College has been dedicated to providing quality education to students from all backgrounds. During World War II, Peru State College trained over 400 military personnel for service in the Army Air Corps Technical Training Program. After WWII, enrollment began to decline as many veterans returned home but eventually picked back up again during the Korean War. Today Peru State College is a four-year public liberal arts institution that offers over 30 degree programs ranging from business administration to criminal justice. The college also offers an online program for students unable to attend classes on campus due to their location or other commitments. Check Andyeducation for educational systems in Wyoming.
