Pennsylvania State University at Erie, The Behrend College was established in 1948 as the Behrend Campus of Penn State. It was originally named the School of Engineering and was located on the grounds of Gannon College, which had closed during World War II. The School initially offered just two-year programs in engineering and industrial arts. In 1950, the name was changed to Penn State-Behrend College and began offering four-year degrees in engineering technology and business administration. The college continued to expand its offerings, adding more majors including mathematics, computer science, psychology, and liberal arts. By 1969 it had become one of Penn State’s largest campuses with an enrollment of over 3200 students.

In 1976 a major milestone occurred when the college became accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools as a four-year degree granting institution. This enabled Behrend to offer bachelor’s degrees in all disciplines that are now offered at Penn State campuses throughout Pennsylvania.

Since then, Pennsylvania State University at Erie, The Behrend College has grown to become one of Penn state’s most prestigious campuses with an enrollment of over 4500 students from all 50 states and 63 countries worldwide.
