Peace College was established on August 1, 1857 in Raleigh, North Carolina. It began as a school for women and has remained so to this day. The school was founded by Reverend William Peace and his wife, Sarah Ann Peace. They believed that education should be available to all, regardless of gender or financial status. The college was supported by the Methodist Church and had a mission to provide quality education to young women.
The college’s first class of students included seven young women who were taught by Reverend Peace and his wife. During the Civil War, Peace College closed its doors due to financial difficulties resulting from the war. In 1872, the college reopened with a new president, Dr. Charles Fayette Taylor. Under his leadership, the school flourished and grew in size with an emphasis on academic excellence and character development of its students. In 1925, the college became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America and changed its name to Peace Institute in honor of its founders’ legacy of peace-building through education. In 1986, Peace Institute became co-educational when men were admitted into the college for the first time since it opened in 1857.
