Paul Quinn College was founded in 1872 as a private, African-American college in Austin, Texas. It was originally called the New Hope Baptist Church Institute and was created to provide educational opportunities for African Americans who were unable to attend other institutions due to segregation. The college was renamed Paul Quinn College in 1877 after its first president, Reverend Paul Quinn. Throughout its history, the college has been dedicated to providing a quality education for African Americans and other minority populations.

In the early 1900s, Paul Quinn College experienced a period of growth under the leadership of President J.H. Jackson. He helped expand the school’s curriculum and build new structures on campus such as a library and gymnasium.
