Our Lady of the Lake College was founded in 1923 by the Sisters of St. Mary, a Catholic order dedicated to providing education to young women. The college began as a two-year college and offered courses such as English, French, Latin, mathematics and science. In 1933 the college was granted accreditation by the Texas State Board of Education and began offering four-year degrees in 1935. The college grew quickly and by 1947 had expanded its curriculum to include business, education, nursing and home economics. In 1951 the college moved to its current location in San Antonio and changed its name to Our Lady of the Lake University. Over the next decade, enrollment grew steadily as new programs were added including graduate studies in 1962. Today Our Lady of the Lake University is a comprehensive four-year university offering more than 60 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs with an enrollment of over 3,000 students from all over the world.
