Ouachita Baptist University was founded in 1886 by a group of local citizens who wanted to establish a college in the Ouachita Valley. The school was named after the Ouachita River, which runs through the area. The university began with just 10 students and two faculty members, and quickly grew to become one of the most respected educational institutions in Arkansas. In its early years, Ouachita offered classes in theology and education. Over time, it expanded its curriculum to include sciences and liberal arts programs. During World War II, Ouachita served as an army training center for officers. Throughout its history, Ouachita has remained dedicated to providing an excellent Christian education for students from all backgrounds. It has also maintained strong ties with the Southern Baptist Convention and other religious denominations throughout the region. Today, Ouachita is a comprehensive liberal arts university that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 50 fields of study including business administration, nursing, education, music performance and more.
