Ohio Wesleyan University was founded in 1842 by Methodist leaders and local citizens of Delaware, Ohio. The university was originally known as the Ohio Wesleyan Female College and offered only a limited curriculum in the arts and sciences. In 1850, the college changed its name to Ohio Wesleyan University and began to offer a more comprehensive curriculum. During this time, the university also started to admit both men and women as students. From 1875 to 1925, the university underwent major changes in its academic program, expanding course offerings and introducing new majors such as mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, philosophy, psychology, sociology and education. The university also began offering graduate programs in 1908. By the 1920s, Ohio Wesleyan had become one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in America with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
