Ohio University was founded in 1804, making it the oldest university in the state of Ohio and the ninth oldest public university in the United States. It is located in Athens, Ohio, about 70 miles southeast of Columbus. The university was established as an act of the Ohio General Assembly and was initially called American Western University. It soon became known as Ohio University, and its first classes were held in 1809.
