Occidental College was founded in 1887 by a group of Presbyterian clergy and laymen, led by James George Edwards. The college was originally located in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, and began with just 11 students. The founders had a vision to create an institution of higher learning that would provide a liberal arts education to the city’s diverse population.
In 1898, the college became non-sectarian and moved to its current location in Eagle Rock. During the first half of the 20th century, Occidental experienced significant growth. In 1914, the college opened its first graduate school and began offering classes in business administration and education. The 1930s saw the construction of numerous buildings on campus, including the Johnson Student Center and Thorne Hall. In 1946, Occidental became one of the first colleges west of the Mississippi to admit African American students as part of its commitment to equality and diversity.
