Oakwood University was founded in 1896 as Oakwood Industrial School by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Initially, the school was located in Huntsville, Alabama and served as a training school for African American students. It was the first institution of higher learning in Alabama to be owned and operated by African-Americans. During the early years, classes were held in a two-story brick building with a capacity of about 200 students. The school offered courses such as Bible, industrial arts, and normal training courses to prepare teachers for elementary schools.
In 1904, Oakwood Industrial School officially became Oakwood College and began offering college degrees leading to bachelor’s degrees in education and theology. In addition to these degree programs, Oakwood also offered courses such as music, business administration, and home economics. In 1941, Oakwood College became the first accredited historically black college south of Maryland. Over the years, Oakwood College grew significantly in size and scope with new buildings being added including a library and dormitories for student housing. In 2007 it underwent an expansion that included new buildings for its business department, science department, student center/cafeteria complex, health sciences center and more. In 2008 it was renamed Oakwood University due to its growth into a university-level institution offering bachelor’s degrees across multiple disciplines such as engineering technology and nursing science that are not typically found at colleges or universities of this size.
