Oakland University was founded in 1957 by Matilda Dodge Wilson and John A. Hannah. Located in Rochester, Michigan, it is the only major research institution in Oakland County. Initially, the school was called Michigan State University-Oakland and it offered only graduate level courses. It wasn’t until 1959 that Oakland University became an independent four-year institution with its own Board of Trustees and President. In 1970, the university began offering undergraduate classes for the first time, making it a true liberal arts college.

The 1980s saw significant growth at Oakland University as enrollment skyrocketed from 3,500 students to nearly 12,000 by 1989. This period of growth also brought with it new academic programs and buildings such as the Human Health Building and Meadow Brook Theatre. The university continued to add new facilities throughout the 1990s including a recreation center and student housing complex that would become known as The Hill.

In 2003, OU opened its Engineering Center which has since become one of the most advanced engineering facilities in the Midwest region. The university has also added multiple research centers such as The Center for Advanced Automotive Research (CAAR). These facilities have enabled OU to become a leader in STEM education while still providing students with a well-rounded liberal arts experience.
