Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) was founded in 1887 by Anna Leonowens. Leonowens was a British educator who came to Halifax to teach at the Victoria School of Art and Design. She was the first woman in Canada to teach art, and she had a vision of creating a college that would provide quality education for aspiring artists. In 1895, NSCAD opened its doors as the Victoria School of Art and Design. At the time, it was one of the few art schools in North America that accepted women students.

The school grew steadily over the next century, changing its name to Nova Scotia College of Art in 1925, and then to Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in 1969. During this period, NSCAD became known for its unique approach to art education; it focused on concept-driven teaching rather than technical skill-building.
