Northwestern Oklahoma State University was established in 1897 as a private institution. It was originally known as the Northwestern Normal School, and its purpose was to provide teacher training and education. The school was located in Alva, Oklahoma and its first class had nine students. In 1910, the school became part of the Oklahoma state system of higher education and was renamed Northwestern State Normal School. In 1919, the school adopted a four-year curriculum and changed its name to Northwestern State Teachers College.
In 1939, the college began offering bachelor’s degrees in liberal arts and sciences and changed its name to Northwestern State College. Four years later, in 1943, it became an official member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. During this period, the college added several new programs such as business administration, agriculture science, nursing, physical education, library science studies and home economics. Since then, Northwestern has grown exponentially in terms of both enrollment numbers and academic offerings. Today it offers more than 40 undergraduate majors as well as numerous graduate degree programs including master’s degrees in business administration (MBA), educational leadership (EDL) and counseling psychology (CP).
