Northwestern College was founded in 1902 by the Evangelical Association and the United Church of Christ. The college was established to provide a Christian education for students from all backgrounds and denominations. The first classes were held in a former church building, with just 24 students. Over the next century, Northwestern College grew in size and scope, eventually becoming a co-educational institution. In the 1950s, Northwestern opened its doors to all faiths and began offering graduate programs in addition to its undergraduate offerings. By the 1990s, Northwestern had become an accredited liberal arts college with over 5,000 students enrolled annually. Today, Northwestern College continues to offer an excellent Christian education while also providing students with opportunities to explore their interests through internships and study abroad programs. The college remains committed to helping each student reach their full potential in order to become successful members of society.
