The school was originally called Northwest Nazarene College and its mission was to provide Christian education for both students and pastors. In 1931, it moved to its current location in Nampa, Idaho. The school changed its name to Northwest Nazarene University in 1997 to reflect its growth and expansion into offering four-year degrees in a variety of disciplines as well as graduate programs.

The university has grown significantly since its beginning, now offering 40 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs across five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Social & Behavioral Sciences and Theology & Christian Ministries. In addition to over 2,000 students enrolled at the main campus in Nampa, there are also over 3,000 online students enrolled at NNU from all over the world. NNU is also home to many student activities including clubs and organizations such as intramural sports teams and student government.
