Northwest Missouri State University was founded in 1905 as a two-year institution called the Fifth District Normal School. The school was originally created to train teachers for the rural school districts in the northwest region of Missouri. Initially, the curriculum was focused on teacher preparation and included classes in grammar, literature, history, and science. In 1921, the school’s name changed to Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and its curriculum expanded to include four-year degree programs. By 1933, the college had earned accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and began offering courses in business administration, home economics, music education, physical education, and industrial arts. Over the years, additional academic programs were added and in 1965 Northwest became a university with its current name.
