Northeastern State University was established in 1909 as the third state-supported teacher training school in Oklahoma. It was originally called the Northeastern State Normal School and its mission was to provide quality education to those seeking to become teachers. The first classes were held in the fall of 1909 with just over 200 students and 12 faculty members. Over the next few decades, the school expanded its curriculum and offerings, becoming Northeastern State College in 1939 and finally Northeastern State University in 1974.
Throughout its history, NSU has been dedicated to serving its students and local community through various programs and initiatives. In 1920, NSU started a summer school program for teachers of all levels in order to help them continue their education during summer months. The university also became a leader in Native American education when it began offering classes specifically designed for Native American students in 1923. In addition, NSU has developed several educational outreach programs that serve rural communities throughout Oklahoma, providing educational opportunities for those who may not have access otherwise.
