North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was founded in 1910 by Dr. James E. Shepard as a private liberal arts college for African Americans. Initially known as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, it was the first state-supported liberal arts college for African Americans in the United States. The school was chartered by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly on March 9, 1910 and renamed Durham State Normal School in 1914. In 1923, it changed its name to North Carolina College for Negroes and became a part of the state’s system of higher education, which included nine colleges in total.
In 1939, NCCU began to offer graduate programs and was approved by the North Carolina Board of Higher Education to become a four-year degree granting institution. During this period, NCCU gained recognition as one of the nation’s leading institutions for African American academics.
