Nicholls State University, located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, was founded in 1948 as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University. The college was named after Francis T. Nicholls, a former governor of the state who had proposed that a college be established in the area. It was initially intended to provide educational opportunities to local residents and veterans returning from World War II. In 1956, the college became independent from LSU and was renamed Francis T. Nicholls State College.
In 1970, the college’s name changed once again to Nicholls State University by an act of the Louisiana Legislature and Board of Trustees. This change brought with it greater autonomy for the university and allowed it to offer graduate degrees for the first time. Since then, Nicholls has grown steadily to become one of Louisiana’s leading universities in terms of academic excellence and student life experience. It now offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs across five colleges: Business Administration; Education; Nursing & Health Sciences; Sciences & Technology; and Arts & Humanities. The university also has a thriving research program with faculty conducting research in areas such as coastal erosion, environmental sciences, biotechnology, robotics engineering and more.
