New Jersey City University (NJCU) was established in 1929 as a private institution called the New Jersey State Normal School. The school was founded to provide teacher training and professional development to students who were preparing to become educators in the state of New Jersey. In 1951, the school changed its name to Jersey City State College and began offering bachelor’s degrees in addition to its teaching credentials. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, more courses were added, including science and mathematics courses, as well as a graduate program for master’s degrees in education.

In the 1970s, the college began offering more liberal arts courses and changed its name once again to New Jersey City University. During this time, NJCU continued to grow and expand by adding additional academic programs such as computer science, criminal justice, business administration, and nursing. In 1996, NJCU became a public university when it joined the state university system of New Jersey.
